‘Teaching Everyone to Cook’ Learning Resource

Our mission at Can Cook is to ‘teach everyone to cook’ and to inspire and enthuse pupils to enjoy cookery and food.

Schools CookeryAs part of this, Can Cook have produced an Interactive Learning Resource for Secondary Schools - aiming to support the delivery of food, practical cookery skills and enterprise across the curriculum, combining practical programmes with theory. The resource is suitable to be used across the secondary school curriculum but also specifically references the BTEC in Hospitality, GCSE’s in Catering and Hospitality and the Level 2 Hospitality Diploma respectively.

‘Teaching Everyone to Cook’  links a theoretical and knowledge based approach to practical programmes that have all been tried and tested with secondary school students. It has been designed to provide high impact in terms of the level of engagement, skill progression and the confidence of students- focusing on impact in school, in the home and preparing students for potential food related careers. Schools Cookery

The Resource includes:

Teachers notes/lesson plans and student worksheets designed to be used in conjunction with the interactive DVD.

The DVD has sections on:

Planning an Event -This section is particularly relevant across the curriculum and enables teachers to use the resource to focus on other areas of hospitality and event planning that do not necessarily need to be food related.

Health Safety and Hygiene - including Nutrition and the Principles of a Balanced Diet, and Safety and Hygiene in the Food Environment - this section is highly interactive and enables students to apply knowledge to real life and the working environment. They include taking students through identifying hazards, preparing risk assessments, food contamination and cleaning.

The other sections of the DVD are based on practical food skills and contain a number of Chef Demonstration Videos. The demonstrations are based on Basic Food Preperation Skills such as Knife Skills, Baking, Pasta  and Stock Making and Contemporary World Foods including a variety of Indian, Italian and British Dishes – demonstrated by the Can Cook Chefs.

“The resource is so far proving to be it’s weight in gold.  I am currently using the videos, interactive activities, work sheets and tasks outlined in the lesson plans to teach a health and social care unit ‘The impact of diet on health’ – including teaching the principles of nutrition.”

“The videos are informative and at just the right level for the ability of the students. The recipes are great – especially for a year 9 unit of work based on contemporary world foods”

“This is the only resource I have come across that suitable for all the key stages.  I cannot recommend the resource enough!”
