ABOUT GOOD FOOD HUBS

Our starting point for the Hubs was to re-imagine Meals on Wheels and set out to create a new service that feeds everyone well – particularly older people and families seeking fresh, convenient, good-food options.

Through partnering with us, existing community centres across Liverpool and North Wales will have the opportunity to become a Good Food Hub. Each Hub becomes a good meal distribution point, selling our meals to the residents who use the centres’ services or are able to reach out to other residents (individuals who may be housebound of families that may need support). It’s a perfect mix; the centre knows its constituency best and they take the orders. We are then ready and able to supply great fresh meals, making sure everyone has access to healthier food. It’s then delivered to the centre ready to be picked up by local residents (customers) or delivered into residents homes if they are unable to pick up for themselves.
A Good Food Hub links the best of a good food service to the best of community development/support – it’s Meals on Wheels re-imagined; it means that older people and families should never have to go hungry and it means that every centre that becomes a Hub will have the means to add a new and vital service to its delivery. Currently we have we 5 hubs operating across Flintshire and North Wales, with a further 10 Hubs set to open across the Liverpool City Region throughout 2019 – each one picked because the centre is already very good at connecting to its community. To open each one, we have a dedicated staff team able to assist a centre as they become part of the network.

Sustainability

Here at Can Cook, our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstance, has the option of good food – and we use our community hubs to help us in this pledge. This year we partnered with Liverpool City Council to devise a project that saw us create and deliver thousands of Slow Cooker Bags and ingredient packs to vulnerable families across several South Liverpool communities. By giving these families the tools, recipes and ingredients to create healthier meals easily, we took another step towards our goal of good food for everyone.

Throughout the project, we worked with a network of organisations that truly care about the communities they operate in. Through these partnerships we’ve been able to monitor the impact that good food and the dignity of choice has had on their constituents. More importantly, we’ve been able to sustain our council-funded efforts through opening up a new Good Food Hub with St Cyril’s Children & Youth Project.
Following each step of our good food mission were three University of Liverpool students, Millie, Beth and Emma. With us, they documented the journey from project to programme, from delivering food-aid to creating a sustainable food solution. Take a look at their video to see how we utilise our hubs to truly feed communities well.
