Our Work

We have taught over 10,000 children and young people to cook – this has provided us with an incredible insight into what and how they like to eat. In addition, since 2012, we have worked extensively to provide school menus that encourage children and young people to make conscious choices about their food. With us, children and young people are encouraged to try different dishes and explore new tastes and flavours, cultivating an appreciation of a diverse range of foods; vital to their physical development and learning in school. We also appreciate that children and young people have their favourites foods, so we make sure we only ever cater meals that children and young people recognise as their favourite meal types. Our commitment is to only feed every child and every young person, well!

What do we offer?

We offer a school catering solution that works for any school. We understand the pressures that catering for large numbers can present and to enable smooth running of a lunch time operation, so we offer a solution which suits the needs of each school.

Our solutions include:

Full service: Full-time management of existing school kitchen staff and catering service.

On-site support: On site chef and staff support for existing catering staff.

Consultancy: We provide advice and help plan how to improve food offer and enhance how the kitchen is managed.

Meal delivery service: We prepare and deliver meals, ready to be served in-school.

Produce & package your meals:

Local procurement is key to our long-term business model. When possible, we only use suppliers local to our operation to support local businesses and protect local jobs. This in turn, is not only beneficial for the local economy but also the environment; by reducing carbon-omissions from limiting the distance goods are transported.

Your food is hand prepared in our Shotton based production kitchen by our skilled chefs, and packed and sealed freshly cooked in recyclable heat-resistant trays without the need for any additives or preservatives. Meals are then labelled, with allergen declarations and heating instructions ready for delivery.

We deliver to you:

Using our refrigerated vehicles we deliver meals two times each week to avoid the need for large storage. Once delivered our meals will be stored in your fridge ready for your staff to take out and simply reheat using the instructions provided.

Download our school food sample menu here, please share it with anyone who might be interested in our fresh, school catering service.
Note: We never offer sandwiches in our menus. The reason for this is that we believe that sandwiches are cheap alternatives to meals that caterers often use to keep costs down. Check out our blog here.

Allergies and Intolerances

Allergen management is an important aspect of our work and all our staff are trained in allergen management. The meals provided as part of our chilled meal delivery service come labelled with a full list of allergens.

We continually review all our practices in compliance with ‘Natasha’s Law’.

Dietary Requirements

Like food, we are all unique and the adherence to follow a specific religious or cultural diet is often required. While it may not be possible to accommodate everyone, working with our customers, we will provide guidance on best practice to adapt a dish by leaving out or substituting ingredients.

And we go further…

Beyond the school kitchen we also look to work with the teaching staff, children and young people and parents to create a whole school food culture, and influencing diet and nutrition beyond the school gates and into children’s homes. To do this we introduce our Feeding Futures Programme’.

‘Feeding Futures’ is all about a good-school-food solution designed to install a positive food culture across the school

To establish a good-food-culture:

  • We only ever be offered fresh meals and never processed snacks
  • We celebrate special event days e.g. World Book Day, Chinese New Year- through the introduction of special meals
  • We teach children, teachers and parents to cook
  • We support for families who are in food poverty providing free fresh meals to help them overcome their difficulties and;
  • We will introduce new packed lunch and meal options that can help feed children an improved diet and add additional income into the school.
Can Cook have provided our school meals since 2016 and we are delighted with the quality of food and their levels of service. We have a very successful partnership which I am sure will develop over future years. Their food is of a high quality, and they are always responsive and flexible to our needs and requirements.
