It is estimated that 60,000 people in Liverpool have accessed a food bank in the last 12 months.. This includes low paid workers, unemployed, disabled and sick . Approximately 25% of food bank users were elderly people and a further 25% were children. This figure doesn’t take account of the thousands of people who didn’t access food banks and borrowed money to feed themselves, or those who went silently hungry until they could next afford food. Additionally, there are thousands of families in the Liverpool City Region living on the verge of food crisis, whose income doesn’t allow for fresh food in their diets.
At Can Cook we believe that good food is a human right and that everybody should have access to fresh food by choice, regardless of their circumstances. We have teamed up with celebrity chef, Simon Rimmer and the Liverpool Echo to launch the Share Your Lunch campaign, looking to generate up to 50,000 free, fresh meals for hungry people in Merseyside. Working alongside corporate partners and sponsors and the people of Merseyside to raise funds to provide everybody in food poverty in Liverpool with nutritious, fresh food and ending food poverty in the region.
